Michael Whitbread Prize


 

This is the online application for the Michael Whitbread Prize. Read the information below carefully before starting your application.

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for the prize an applicant must:

  • be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or the holder of an Australian permanent resident visa or permanent humanitarian visa; and
  • be enrolled full time in a UTS Bachelor of Laws (single or combined degree) or UTS Juris Doctor; and
  • be in the final or penultimate year of their UTS Law degree course; and
  • apply for the prize online using the UTS Prize Application Form; and
  • be available to attend an interview in person.

Selection criteria

As demonstrated in the prize application and interview:

  • Personal attributes that contribute to the recipient’s motivation and ability to succeed in their chosen UTS Law course,
  • Demonstrated initiative in personal and professional life;
  • Potential for the internship experience to further the Recipient’s law career
  • Alignment to the culture, values and goals of Gleiss Lutz;
  • Academic merit (weighted average mark, WAM) in current UTS course may be taken into consideration.

Additionally, preference may be given to applicants that have experienced any long-term educational barriers and/or personal hardship including:

  • carer responsibilities;
  • financial disadvantage;
  • Indigenous Australian;
  • long-term medical condition, disability, or ongoing effects of abuse;
  • refugee status;
  • regional or remote background;sole parent.

To apply for this prize please complete this online application form. Please read the information below carefully before commencing your application.

Supporting statements: Prepare answers for the questions below (maximum of 300 words for each question, do not use bullet points or any special formatting):

  1. What sets you apart from other applicants and makes you unique as a person? Please use specific examples to demonstrate this.
  2. What single achievement are you most proud of and why?
  3. Describe your motivation to intern at Gleiss Lutz. How would this experience align with your interests, in terms of your UTS Law studies, extracurricular activities and the career paths you want to pursue?
  4. Describe your motivation to work in the field of law.
  5. We would like to award this prize to someone who may not have an opportunity to travel in this way otherwise. Explain how this is may be applicable to you and any equity considerations that are relevant to your application.

Please note:

  • Applicants must satisfy all eligibility criteria.
  • Being eligible does not guarantee a prize.
  • Applicants are ranked against the selection criteria and the prize will be awarded to applicant who best meets the criteria as part of a competitive process.
  • Prizes are limited and there are more applicants than prizes.
  • Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Applications close on Monday 27 January 2025. All applications must be submitted online by this date. Late applications will not be considered.
